Significant Figures
Well, i guess some of you have forgotten how to correct a number to a certain number of significant figures. Here's some notes... hopefully they are useful!
1. All non-zero digits are significant. For instance, 3456 is considered 4 sf.
2. Zeros occurring between non-zero digits are significant. For instance, 6.01 is considered 3 sf.
3. In a decimal, all 0 to the left of the non-zero [ie, before the non-zero digit] are not significant. For eg, 0.000025 is considered as 2 sf only.
4. Zeros to the right of the non-zero digits [ie zero after the non-zero digits] may or may not be significant. Take 5400 for example. we can take it as either 2sf, 3sf or 4sf.
Here's some questions for you to try out:
Correct the following to 3 sig fig.
(a) 567890
(b) 0.1020304
(c) 0.19999
(d) 1.00065
(e) 10.081
